I wish I could claim there is no necessity for this topic in HR! Unfortunately, living in the polarized environment known as the 21st century, there has never been a greater need for conversational tools like the ones that will be introduced in this engaging talk.

This presentation consists of two powerful communication strategies: “Conversity” and “Crucial Conversation.” Conversity is a process that helps people create bonds through dialogue.  Participants will explore how a conversation with an intentional focus on commonalities can lead to attitudes and behaviors that capitalize on human differences.  While the application of diversity can inadvertently appear as divisive and hinder further dialogue, Conversity is positive, proactive, and designed to bring people together.

Once a foundation of commonalities has been built, and a connection has been established through Conversity, then differences can be carefully and sensitively addressed through Crucial Conversation.

When stakes are high, when opinions vary, and when emotions are running strong, you have a Crucial Conversation.  Engaging in this second communication strategy, participants will learn the importance of figuring out what they actually want and how dialogue can help them get it.  Employing a Crucial Conversation helps minimize defensiveness in others who hold different opinions.  The critical importance of separating facts from opinions—especially our own—will be emphasized.
